Memo from Planet Earth

| | Comments (0)

This planet is infested with an alarming assortment of viruses. At any given time several of the humans with whom I come into regular contact are contagious. I rarely succumb to these human diseases, but last week I neglected to hold my breath throughout the duration of a week-long series of meetings during which the human whom I am employed to support was particularly infectious.

No need to send medication; by the time it would arrive I expect I will have recovered.

Rebirth of the Blog

Like the new title?

I never really liked "Becalmed". I started this blog right after Mike left for college, and I expected the title to be a fitting description of what life would feel like in an empty house.

Nope. Life is just as hectic as ever. More so, in fact, since I'm now in a job that requires quite a bit of travel. Weekends feel particularly hectic, oddly, since I try to cram all housework, yard work, and shopping into them along with any "fun" stuff I want to do but don't have time for during the week.

I'm in my office right now and am obviously wasting time messing with the blog, but last week was grueling and I came down with a cold over the weekend. It's a sign of real devotion that I dragged myself out of bed at all this morning.

It's My Birthday

Hello everybody. Today is my birthday--I'm two years old. I got some nice presents, as you can see:

All my favorite treats, except for that square box of items on the left. I'm not too sure about any of that, but we'll see.

In honor of this being my Birthday, I sat nicely for the old dame so she could take my picture. Here I am:

That's all for now, folks, I've got a new bone to chew.

Ugh

What a hellish way to spend a Saturday. Or any day, for that matter: I'm doing my taxes. I started last night but gave up when I hit a snag. Damn the stock options I occasionally get from the company I work for. The hassle of figuring out the taxes almost makes it not worth it to exercise an option. (God, what a sentence. My brain is fried.) I started again early this morning and I've spent the entire day working on the 1040 and haven't finished yet. I'm sitting at the computer now because I'm printing out a form 6251. Ugh ugh ugh ugh ugh.

I'm almost done with the 1040, thank god. Tomorrow I guess I'll do the state taxes, which are much easier. Then I'll do Mike's, which should be dead easy, since he didn't make any money last year, lol.

Everybody in my family asks me why I don't pay to have my taxes done. I did pay one year, but the accountant charged me $450. My brother goes to H&R Block and they charge him like $20. I don't know why it costs me so much. The accountant charged me $125 just to do Mike's taxes that year, and his taxes take all of about 15 minutes. I refuse to pay that kind of money to have my taxes done when I'm perfectly capable of doing them myself. But god I hate, hate, hate it.

romantic dining

Hello folks, Saint here. It's been a while since I've put paw to keyboard. My second birthday is coming up soon--I hope there are some serious plans underfoot. The old dame is sure keeping her plans secret.

Tonight she and I had dinner together, which was a rare treat for yours truly. I usually hang out in my crate while she's eating, but tonight she decided to eat on the spur of the moment, and I was fortunate enough to be there at that moment. The old dame had Joe's O's for dinner, which she ate by the handful right out of the box while standing at the kitchen counter. Joe's O's are Trader Joe's cheerios knock-off, she says, and I'm quite fond of them. She tossed handfuls into my dish while she ate: one handful in the mouth, one handful in the dish, and so on. Very nice. Being a guy I'm not sentimental, but neither am I oblivious to a bonding experience.
